Peace Corps–WaterSHED Sanitation Marketing Collaboration Launches with Strong Success in Siem Reap
On August 9, 2011, Peace Corps-Cambodia, in collaboration with WaterSHED, reported a tremendously successful launch of its sanitation marketing project in Siem Reap’s Kralanh district. In the first 5 days of sales, households placed 70 unsubsidized orders for toilets – an outstanding start to the project, which aims to sell 600 toilets within the district by 30 January 2012. The new Peace Corps sanitation project is funded through a USAID Small Project Assistance grant with technical assistance provided by WaterSHED.
Based on WaterSHED’s “Hands-Off” sanitation marketing model pioneered in Cambodia, the project provides support and capacity building to local sanitation enterprises, sales agents, and officials. By promoting the power of the market to increase sustainable sanitation access at scale, the “Hands-Off” approach aims to sustain toilet sales, installation and use, long after the project is finished.
