WaterSHED Projects Spotlighted in Berlin TEDxChange Talk
On 05 April 2012, WaterSHED’s innovative sanitation marketing and handwashing programs were highlighted at an internationally broadcast TEDxChange event in Berlin, Germany. Award-winning IDEO product designer Jeff Chapin presented his experience partnering with WaterSHED to create two pioneering products: a low-cost latrine kit in Cambodia and a novel handwashing device in Vietnam. The talk emphasized the importance of a human-centered design process and how this approach has guided development of low-cost sanitation and hygiene products that consumers want and can afford.
Since launching the sanitation marketing program in October 2010, WaterSHED has facilitated the sales of over 23,000 latrine kits in Cambodia and has inspired similar programs regionally. WaterSHED’s handwashing program was recently awarded USAID DIV funding that will jumpstart business development and the commercial introduction of the handwashing device in Vietnam.
TEDxChange (Technology, Entertainment, Design), in partnership with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, promotes game-changing ideas in global health and development to help catalyze discussion and action.
